PRESENTATION / BIO

Holder of a degree in Choreography and Dance Performance Techniques from the Ministry of Education and from the American Ballet Theatre NTC (New York). He began his studies with Dolores Beaskoetxea and Nekane Ormaetxea, later completing his training with Víctor Ullate in Madrid thanks to a grant from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. In 1997, he made his professional debut as a dancer with the Víctor Ullate Ballet – Comunidad de Madrid.

CV / PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

He has worked with the Víctor Ullate Ballet, Ballet de Zaragoza, English National Ballet, K-Ballet Company Tetsuya Kumakawa (Japan), Companhia Nacional de Bailado (Portugal), Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsballett Berlin, and the Contemporary Ballet of Basel in Switzerland. As a choreographer, he has created pieces for leading figures of the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin, Ballet de l’Opéra de Nice, Bayerische Staatsoper, Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, and New York City Ballet.
Artistic Director at MásQdanza, he participates as a jury member in artistic activities and is invited to teach dance courses at dance conservatories and international companies.

DESCRIPTION / OBJECTIVES

Jon Ugarriza’s master classes are designed to support aspiring dancers and choreographers during their training period. The technique classes will focus on greater control of the body and mind, directing students toward intelligent, tension-free use of their bodies. The choreographies from Jon Ugarriza’s repertoire selected for this course are performed by leading figures of the current dance world and will be adapted for higher-degree students, with the aim of showing how a professional dancer works and develops.
Finally, Jon Ugarriza will propose a choreographic workshop in which he will provide guidelines for creating a choreography. Students will be responsible for making the decisions leading to the final result.
